FSVP Enforcement Approaching

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin enforcing the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) on May 30, 2017. FSVP will require U.S. food or food product importers to perform risk-based activities to verify that imports have been produced in a manner that meets applicable U.S. safety standards. Among other responsibilities, U.S. importers will be required to evaluate and approve foreign suppliers, designate a "Qualified Individual" to create risk-based FSVPs as well as conduct verification activities and corrective actions.

Brazilian Ports Affected by Strike

A two day strike by audit inspectors of the Receita Federal (RF), Brazil's Custom agency, is causing cargo delays at all the main Brazilian ports. Audit Inspectors are opposed to legislation that will reduce compulsory payments to trade unions, reduce pension funds, and raise the retirement age for RF workers. The strike has caused a backlog of customs clearances are estimated at 2,000 containers.

EU Relaxes Port Investment Rules

The European Commission, the EU's executive, said member states can invest up to 150 million euros ($167 million) in sea ports and 40 million euros in inland ports without first having to seek approval from Brussels' competition regulators. The relaxation of the so-called Block Exemption Regulation also applies to approximately 420 airports in the 28 member states that handle less than 3 million passengers per year. World Trade Celebrations

Did you know? World Trade Week is celebrated annually during the third week of May. The World Trade Week concept originated in Southern California in 1926 and has since spread to various U.S. cities. With more than 95 percent of the world's consumers living outside of the United States, global trade boosts both the national and global economy. Lockout at Port of Gothenburg

APM Terminals (APMT) has announced that a six-week lockout is scheduled to run from May 19 through June 30 at its Gothenburg terminal. The dispute between the Swedish Dockworkers' Union and APMT has reportedly been ongoing for the last year. According to the JOC (Journal of Commerce), Maersk Line and Safmarine told customers on Wednesday that they will no longer accept bookings for cargo moving through Gothenburg. APMT handles roughly 50 percent of Sweden's container volume.

Delhi Bans Hazardous Containers

A recent spill at the Tughlakabad Inland Container Depot has prompted the Container Corporation of India (Concor), the facility operator, to ban the handling of hazardous cargo. Many providers have stopped accepting hazardous shipment to and from the inland container port due to the ban. The inland port is located in the north of India and handles a majority of the hinterland traffic.
