Hurricane Harvey Update

Logistics operations across Southeastern Texas continue to be hampered as tropical storm Harvey continues to affect the region with rainfall projected to reach 50 inches through Friday. Bush International and Hobby airports remain closed due to flooding. Likewise, the ports in Houston, Galveston, Texas City, Freeport and Corpus Christi remain closed. At this time, an opening day cannot be determined. The Port of Brownsville reopened on Saturday. Highway and rail conditions have also prompted Union Pacific, BNSF and Kansas City Southern to suspend service, along with trucking companies in the region. Please note, service disruptions will impact ocean, air, truck and rail networks across the United States, with potential delays occurring for several weeks. Unitrans will continue to monitor the situation. If you have any questions, please contact your local Unitrans Service representative.

London Heathrow Hits Cargo Record

London Heathrow airport cargo traffic grew at an all-time high in July. Europe's 4th largest air freight hub grew largely driven by an increase in American Airlines trans-Atlantic shipments. American airlines cargo has boosted its presence at Heathrow by expanding overnight trucking services from the Netherlands, Germany, and France to connect with its 20 direct daily flights to the United States.

NYK to Test Autonomous Containership

According to a report by Bloomberg Technology, Tokyo-based NYK Line is the newest carrier to announce its plans to begin testing autonomous vessel technology. NYK could begin testing the technology on the Transpacific trade route in 2019. Click here to read more.

LA-LB Considers New Project

The Los Angeles and Long Beach port complex is proposing a project that would convert nearby land into a yard for import container dray-offs. The initiative would start with 450 slots and expand to a capacity of 3,500 slots if the pilot project is proven successful. Experts predict the project could speed truck turn times up to 10 to 20 percent. The near-dock yard would allow import containers on chassis to be stored for one to two days before being trucked to warehouses.
